mothers2mothers (m2m) is being recognized for developing a scalable grassroots model designed to partner with existing healthcare systems. m2m employs mothers living with HIV as “Mentor Mothers” who help minimize the transmission of HIV/AIDS. Mentor Mothers work for a daily wage alongside doctors and nurses in clinics and maternity wards and educate and support pregnant and new mothers living with HIV.
The other 2012 winner is Soraya Salti, Executive Director of INJAZ Al-Arab, an organization that harnesses the mentorship of Arab business leaders to inspire a culture of entrepreneurialism and innovation among Arab youth.
Established in 2006, the Kravis Prize is presented and administered by Claremont McKenna College and Marie-Josée Kravis and Henry Kravis. Mrs. Kravis, an economist, is a senior fellow of the Hudson Institute; Mr. Kravis is a founding partner, co-chairman and co-CEO of Kohlberg Kravis Roberts & Co.
“In sub-Saharan Africa, m2m is actively providing a new level of hope to women afflicted with HIV/AIDS. Formerly relegated to the periphery of society, m2m has empowered these women to become community leaders and regain a sense of control over their own health and lives,” said Mr. Kravis.
m2m’s co-founder/CEO Gene Falk, and co-founder/International Director Robin Smalley, will attend the gala at Claremont McKenna College in Claremont, California on March 21st, to accept the award. The cash award that accompanies the prize will provide much-needed funds to reach more mothers with the knowledge they need to make healthy choices for themselves and their families. mothers2mothers is honored to join past recipients of the Kravis Prize, and is grateful for the Kravis Foundation’s recognition and support.
